Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (April 26, 2018)—When Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh decided to build four new homes for first-time homebuyers in Homewood, it was a no-brainer for 84 Lumber to get involved. Building upon its 60 plus years of community commitment, the company recently announced a donation of $250,000 over the next year to support future improvements. 84 Lumber is also providing oversight of the project, lumber and building materials and will frame each home and lead all bricklaying efforts. These structural elements are critical to building a strong and safe foundation, both for the home and for the next chapter in each homebuyer’s life.

“Home ownership is the biggest door-opener. Once someone owns their own home, they have the stability to do so much more with their lives—pursue a career, go to school, care for their family,” said 84 Lumber’s President and Owner Maggie Hardy Magerko. “By providing home ownership for more families, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh is opening a door for more people to realize their full potential. There’s nothing more powerful than seeing the look when a first-time homeowner walks through the door for the very first time. That’s why we do what we do.”

This partnership creates new opportunities for deserving families that have completed Habitat for Humanity’s home ownership program. These efforts will ultimately result in equipping families with 30-year, zero percent interest mortgages made available by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh. The development concept in Homewood began several months ago and was officially kicked off Tuesday, April 24, 2018 during a press conference and groundbreaking ceremony.

“The partnership with 84 Lumber will add immeasurably to the sustainability of urban communities, such as Homewood,” said Dr. Howard B. Slaughter Jr., president and chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh.
