Philadelphia, Pennsylvania & Dubai, United Arab Emirates (April 29, 2019)—Hill International, construction risk management company, has announced that the development of Muscat International Airport was chosen as Mega Project of the Year at the 2019 Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) Projects Awards, in association with Mashreq.
One of the largest projects ever to be undertaken in the history of the Sultanate of Oman, the development of Muscat International Airport features a 29-gate passenger terminal building, including state-of-the-art technology that will accommodate 20 million passengers annually. The terminal sits on a floorplate of 418,202 meters squared – equivalent to 80 football pitches. The structures required more than 31,100 tons of structural steel (seven times the amount used in the Eiffel Tower) and required almost 520,000 cubic meters of concrete—twice that in the Burj Khalifa.
The project also encompasses 96 check-in counters, 29 boarding bridges, 30 remote aircraft stands, 10 bus-boarding lounges, a 90-room hotel, two parallel runways and a 97 mile high air-traffic control tower. Hill International deployed approximately 360 team members to the development project, undertaking a large series of services, including construction supervision, contract management and administration, scheduling, training and knowledge transfer.
“It was an honor for all of us at Hill International to sustain Oman’s development strategy by supporting the implementation of this transformative and challenging project,” said Adel Merhi, vice president, country manager at Oman. “Congratulations to all our partnering firms and stakeholders for their impressive efforts in delivering this mega project. Being selected for one of the Middle East’s most prestigious awards by MEED will be a source of pride for a long time.”
This is the fourth award for the development of Muscat International Airport. It was previously named Oman’s National Project of the Year by MEED; Project of the Year by Middle East Consultant Awards; and Infrastructure Project of the Year by Big Project Middle East.
