Orlando, Florida, (Aug. 12, 2019)—The I-4 Ultimate Project Art Endowment Committee, consisting of representatives of I-4 Mobility Partners, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the construction joint venture of Skanska Granite Lane (SGL Constructors), will fund $1.5 million for public art installations that will be integrated into the project landscape to enhance the signature interstate corridor along the 21-mile stretch of I-4, creating a more scenic and cultural experience for motorists and pedestrians.

The fund will be distributed among six municipalities that will oversee the implementation of the public art program. Grant recipients include the city of Orlando, Orange County, the town of Eatonville, Winter Park, Maitland, and Altamonte Springs. For a region that sees more than 70 million visitors a year, the art will be a welcomed addition to the design of the roadway and an opportunity to showcase Central Florida’s more artistic side.

“The I-4 Ultimate is a legacy project that will leave its positive mark on Central Florida for years to come. The art endowment program is a wonderful way to add to that legacy and enhance the community beyond where the rubber meets the road,” said Paul Wabi, P.E., FDOT district five construction program manager

Qualified artists will be selected by the beneficiary municipalities to create art installations that will capture the unique history and character of Central Florida and its unique communities.

“The art endowment program will reflect the individual character of the many diverse communities along the I-4 Ultimate project corridor,” said William McGuinness, project director of SGL Constructors. “While I-4 Ultimate is already considered a transformative project for the region, this program will further enhance the experience for commuters and visitors, and we are very proud to be part of this initiative.”

The call for artists and the implementation of the program will be managed by the six municipalities individually. Each of these communities will have their specific process and criteria for the artist application and proposal process.
